James Albert Cooke II was born in [[Coeur d'Alene]], Idaho on May 7, 1878 to [[James I|James Cooke]] and Isabella Cooke. When he was 5 he joined the Coeur d'Alene Grand School and graduated with honours. When he was 10 he was forced into the Idahoan militia as a private to serve on the front line, though he was pulled out by his cousin who was the president of the newly formed Republic of Idaho.
