ArtsL was founded in 1918 by the Seneca Regent Honorade Théberge to promote higher education in the nation, as it was heavily ignored by the former Onandaga-dominated civil government, and thus made it inaccessible to the general public. The site chosen to house ArtsL was situated in the Tuscacora Nation, this was because the grande école scheme involved giving each nation a new university open to the public.
