Territorial Militia Acts

The Territorial Militia Acts, were a series of acts from 1866–1883 that established the Utah Territorial Militia.

The TMAs would be superseded by the State Militia Acts in 1883.

The Territorial Militia Act, 1866 reestablished the organized militia of Utah in the wake of the Battle at the Southeast Utah Military Academy and the beginning of the War of Western Secession.

The Territorial Militia Act, 1867, allowed the Territory to raise and maintain Regular regiments, for service during and after the War of Western Secession

Territorial Militia Act, 1868

The Territorial Militia Act, 1868 would disband most regiments and decentralized the militia to the county level, while maintaining the few Regular regiments into four brigades.

The Territorial Militia Act, 1872 would allow the Territorial Militia to establish new corps and adminstrative units without the legislature having to pass an Act.

The Legislature would pass this act on advice of Southwestern Militia District commander, Major General Tommy Saxon, after the UTM faced issues with troop deployments and adminstrative hurdles during the Black Hawk War.
