Major General Benjamin Hughes VC, CB, DSC (June 28, 1766-January 21, 1845) was an Canadian army general who served in the Native Wars and the Canadian War. He is most known for his involvement during the Newfoundland Campaign.
Early life
Benjamin Hughes was said to be a strange child who had a very large interest in war and military things. When he was 15 he joined the Royal Cadet Academy in York.
Military career
Great Lakes War
Hughes was involved in the Great Lakes War which was fought between the United States and Canada against the native tribes. He committed atrocities which included burning down villages and killing civilians. For his actions he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.
Newfoundland Campaign
Hughes was a major flaw to the Canadian strategy during the Newfoundland Campaign, he would constantly move in to attack the enemy, which would stretch out the Canadian forces which would befit the Americans.
